18NovWell… it happened…

E74 ErrorFor everyone who didn’t know, I was the owner of a launch day Microsoft Xbox360, and unfortunately on Friday 9th it died. A little tragic as it’s my primary console which I always play, the Wii and Playstation3 don’t get much of a look-in in comparison, so I was a little annoyed. More annoying was the fact that it wasn’t a 3-red light error, which would have resulted in a free fix from Microsoft under their 3 year warranty, it was a 1-red light hardware failure.

Annoyingly, November 9th was the day of the Welsh LAN at Ultra_Extremes hotel in Aberporth. It was a good laugh for a couple of hours, then my console broke. Tragedy. Thankfully McDaniel had brought his American Xbox360 so it allowed me to play 2 US games (College Hoops 2K6 [easy 1000] and MBL 2K6 [zero points]) which was enjoyable. So it wasn’t bad until I got back and was left without a console.

I will openly admit, I did try to make it 3-red light, first by putting it in the oven, but it never worked. It was then put in the oven for a little longer, then thrown straight into the freezer (not actually thrown), where it was left for 15 minutes. It came out and amazingly, booted up, however my suspicions were confirmed that the graphics chip had blown – as I guessed from what ~J~ and JustinWilkins (who killed my console) described it. After a restart it was back to the 1-red light error.

However, a friend came to the rescue who let me use his less than 12 month old reciept and as a result I got it traded within a couple of minutes for a brand-spanking new HDMI Xbox360 Premium. Great. Beever, I owe you :) .

Aren’t you at work? What are the odds you knew about this post less than 20 mins after it was posted? Spooky.

You did lend me £150, but I didn’t want to mention that one incase I got into trouble!

You coming around tomorrow to get your money back?

Sorry I missed out on the LAN. Hopefully will get to meet you at the next one! I hear of people doing that sort of thing all the time with their broken xbox’s. Usually buy a new one from argos then return the broken one.

The only reason the infamous towel trick (or oven trick in Nokkon’s case :) ) works temporary is because it apparently re-melts the cracked solder on chip and allows it to reset again. It’s quite scary how that works tbh.

However, after a quick trawl of youtube, people who do this do in fact get the 3rod afterwards :(

The list of launch day 360′s is getting smaller and smaller. I’m actually considering buying a second 360 should my launchday 360 here pack up during Xmas. Sorry to hear about your machine mate, at least you got yourself a new one :)
