01AprMovies, Movies, Movies…

Over the past 6 weeks I’ve actually watched a fair few movies (some I’ve seen before), I’ve probably seen more in recent weeks than I saw in all of last year… which is quite worrying. For anyone who knows me, I’ve always been a bit of a movie buff and I’d say I know my stuff, but I just stopped watching. Thankfully I have been watching a bit more TV in my room whilst working on some 3D models, so I’ve caught some films I’d normally missed, especially as BBC1 show some truly random movies at around midnight which is prime time for me. So, thinking back at movies I’ve watched (not in chronological order) I’ve seen:

In The Cut:

In The Cut
Meg Ryan plays Frannie Avery, a lonely literature professor obsessed with words and the study of language. Her predictable existence is suddenly turned upside down when she gets dragged into a sinister murder investigation after a girl is found gruesomely murdered in her garden. When Homicide Detective Malloy arrives at her apartment to interview her about the night in question, there is an undeniable chemistry between them. But as the death toll starts to rise Franniediscovers the darker side of her repressed passion and as she finds herself falling for charismatic Malloy she also begins to lose trust in all those around her…

I’d heard bad things about this film from some friends, but ITV2 had it on, there was nothing else on, I love Meg Ryan (hawt) and the prospect of seeing her boobs was a little too strong, so I watched it. I quite enjoyed it, far from the best film I’ve ever seen, but certainly nowhere near the worst. It was certainly a darker movie than I expected it to be, but I though Meg Ryan played her role brilliantly as did Mark Ruffalo opposite her. It’s average at best but much like happened with me, if there’s nothing on and you’re bored, worth a watch, but I wouldn’t recommend going out of your way to see it.

Happy Texas:

Happy Texas
A hilarious comedy where a case of mistaken identity leads to a beauty of a con game! When escaped convicts Harry Sawyer and Wayne Wayne Wayne, Jr. are pulled over in the town of Happy, Texas…while driving a stolen Winnebago…they think they’re being arrested. Rather, they’re immediately welcomed as the vehicle’s owners: a gay couple who’ve come to orchestrate the “Little Miss Fresh-Squeezed Pre-Teen” beauty pageant! Not ones to let a good con pass them by, the pair doesn’t hesitate to adopt flamboyant new personalities…and quickly meet with outrageously unpredictable consequences!

I had no idea what this film was other than I’d heard of it. Being a fan of William H. Macy I decided to give it a watch and I must say, certainly better than I originally thought it would be. Whilst Jeremy Northam and William H. Macy steal the show (particularly with their gay escapades), Steve Zahn is unfortunately more of a hindrance than an asset to the movie, his scenes are particularly weak and unfunny, which is a shame. It’s a refreshing change of pace from the usual midnight movies and made me smile a few times, it’s nothing great and won’t be remembered, but I’ve definitely seen a worse.

Duets:

Duets
Duets is a road-trip comedy about six individuals who throw off the binds of their pre-determined lives and strive to fulfill their dreams. They are: a waitress from West Virginia desperate to become a recording star, an ex-con who sings with the voice of an angel, a salesman who suffers a nervous breakdown while chasing the American Dream, a seasoned Karaoke hustler who is disconnected from everybody and everything, an innocent Vegas showgirl searching for family and love, and a young down-on-his-luck cab driver.
Link: IMDb | Play.com
I’m not a massive fan of Gwyneth Paltrow at all. In fact, prior to Duets I can’t really recall a movie of hers that I’ve enjoyed bar Hoo so I’m not entirely sure why I watched it, I guess I was pulled in by the first scene featuring Huey Lewis hustling a karaoke bar. I’m glad I stuck with the film because the performances from its stars are actually brilliant across the board. The story revolves around the lives of several people who end up converging upon a karaoke tournament for a $5,000 grand-prize with the star performance going to Paul Giamatti who gives a cracking performance as the American salesman who never gets to spend time with his family, constantly traveling the US who finally snaps and has a breakdown where he picks up hitchhiking killer Reggie Kane (Andre Braugher) who end up best of friends. Duets features the voices of many of the actors in the film including the surprisingly good Gwyneth Paltrow (who makes a better singer than an actress) and the always good Huey Lewis. I’d recommend Duets to anyone who wants to see a good film and is willing to immerse themselves in something different.

Blade Runner: (HD-DVD 5 Disc Collectors Edition)

Blade Runner
Visually spectacular, intensely action-packed and powerfully prophetic since its debut, Blade Runner returns in Ridley Scott’s definitive Final Cut, including extended scenes and never-before-seen special effects. In a signature role as 21st-century detective Deckard, Harrison Ford brings his masculine-yet-vulnerable presence to this stylish noir thriller. In a future of high-tech possibility soured by urban and social decay, Deckard hunts for fugitive, murderous replicants – and is drawn to a mystery woman whose secrets may undermine his soul.
Link: IMDb | Play.com

Blade Runner is undoubtedly the most influential science fiction movie of all time and it’s had its upteenth release, this time it’s the catchy ‘Blade Runner: Complete Collector’s Edition’ which features 5 (yes, five!) different versions of the movie across 5 different HD-DVD discs. Firstly we have the ‘Final Cut’, the last release of the movie chosen by Ridley Scott and released in 2007, then we have the Directors Cut released in 1992, the Theatrical and International releases for cinemas released alongside the movie in 1982 and finally we have the never released before Workprint of the movie.

Despite seeing this film well into double figures (I watched it over 5 times in 2 days when ‘researching’ for my Middlesbrough 2105 modelling project at University I really couldn’t wait to see it again.

All 5 versions of Blade Runner have been updated to High-Definition and despite my doubts I must say… it’s bloody fantastic. I’m amazed a 25 year old film can look so phenomenal (and sound it with 5.1 Dolby Digital) the people behind this release deserve all the praise they’ve received. It’s a truly epic masterpiece and anyone who has access to the HD-DVD or Blu-Ray releases really should own this version of this film. It’s maybe the best film ever made and watching it again it really does show just how much this movie has influenced, Ridley Scott had a vision and realised it magnificently and in doing so, changed cinema forever. Not only has this film got 5 versions it also has the most impressive list of extras I’ve ever seen which can be seen at the link to play.com above.

Undoubtedly this film gets a 10 out of 10, to give it anything less would be criminal. I don’t think Science Fiction will ever get any better and there will never be a more influential movie (in any genre) ever. Incredible.

Sleepless in Seattle:

Sleepless in Seattle
Hanks stars as Sam Baldwin, a widowed father who, thanks to the wiles of his worried son, becomes a reluctant guest on a radio call-in show. He’s an instant hit with thousands of female listeners, who deluge his Seattle home with letters of comfort. Meanwhile, inspired in equal parts by Sam’s story and by classic Hollywood romance, writer Annie Reed becomes convinced that it’s her destiny to meet Sam. There are just two problems: Annie’s engaged to someone else, and Sam doesn’t know – yet- that they’re made for each other.
Link: IMDb | Play.com
Sleepless in Seattle, whilst not my favourite romantic comedy is widely known as THE Romantic Comedy, it’s bound to be seen as a timeless classic. I personally prefer Hanks and Ryans’ You’ve Got Mail to Sleepless in Seattle, but nevertheless it was Sleepless that set the benchmark. It’s got the adorable Meg Ryan in it looking adorable and Meg Ryany.

Transformers: (HD-DVD Edition)

Transformers
Dueling alien races, the Autobots and the Decepticons, bring their battle to Earth, leaving the future of humankind hanging in the balance.
Introduced in 1984, the Transformers brand took the world by storm with its compelling saga of the Autobots versus the Decepticons. Over 20 years on and the Transformers are given the live action treatment with Michael Bay at the helm.
Link: IMDb | Play.com

The movie remake of the 80’s classic cartoon Transformers was the major reason for the final HD-DVD push prior to it’s death, unfortunately it did nothing but prolong the death a little while longer. Without it being available on Blu-Ray it was left to the HD-DVD version. I’d seen it in the cinemas and thoroughly enjoyed it then, but after seeing it in HD I was completely blown away. I wasn’t too impressed with the HD rip of it on my PC but the disc based HD-DVD release is streets ahead in video quality.

I watched this with the parents of which neither had seen it and to say they were blown away would be an understatement. Michael Bay (one of my favourite Directors anyway) had a masterstroke when he took Transformers and aimed it at the audience who watched it as a child… that being me. I thought it was incredible, the special effects CG work is the finest ever seen in a movie (how it never won the Oscar I’ll never know) and seeing it in HD is frighteningly good. I’d say it’s certainly worth buying a HD-DVD player on the cheap to see…. it’s that good. I realise I’ve only been talking about the standard of image on Transformers but I’d hazard that you’ve already all seen it so you’ll already all be aware of what you think, what I think is that it’s definitely worth seeing on HD-DVD.

Big

Big
At a carnival, young Josh Baskin wishes he was big – only to awake the next morning and discover he is! With the help of his friend Billy (Jared Rushton), Josh lands a job at a toy company. There, his inner wisdom enables him to successfully predict what children want to buy, making the awestruck, naive Josh irresistible to a beautiful ladder climbing colleague (Elizabeth Perkins). But the more he experiences being an adult, the more Josh longs for the simple joys of childhood.
Link: IMDb | Play.com

A classic 80′s movie (the best kind of movie) who I’m sure you’ve all seen and if you haven’t, first of all, where the hell have you been, second of all, you must see it. This film is a total classic and never loses its charm. It’s still funny even now, it’s that good. I don’t know how many times I’ve seen it, but it truly is one of those films I always watch when it’s on. I do find it amazing how often you see the lead woman smoke in it though, you just wouldn’t have that now, certainly not from a main, ‘good guy’ lead actress.

Cellular

Cellular
If the signal dies so does she.
Though she’s held captive, Jessica Martin (Basinger) manages to contact an unsuspecting young man (Evans) via his cell phone. As he becomes her only lifeline to thwarting the abduction of her young son, the good Samaritan soon gets way more than he bargained for.
Link: IMDb | Play.com

Cellular is best known as an over hyped, under-delivering movie and I’d agree that, that was an accurate synopsis but it’s quite an enjoyable throwaway movie. Unfortunately for us Brits it features Jason Statham in yet another American accented role, stupid as his best roles are all his natural accent ones, but aside from Crank it seems the American market doesn’t want to take that risk… because we all know Americans hate our accent… oh wait a minute… It wasn’t a bad movie as I said, but it’s a million miles away from being a good action movie, which is a shame as I’m a fan of Chris Evans (no, not the Ginger tosser from The Big Breakfast) who was great in Fantastic Four 1 & 2 as well as Not Another Teen Movie and this is another good performance from him, but the plot is a bit daft.

For me, the most annoying this is that Statham and his cronies are constantly leaving Bassinger in the attic and she’s not tied up. Several times you clearly see a single paned glass that’s easily large enough to get out of and from the outside it’s on a 2 tiered roof, so it would be easy to escape from. Daft. For this reason alone the film bugged the hell out of me.

Magicians

Magicians
Lifelong friends Harry and Karl (David Mitchell and Robert Webb) are the greatest magic double act in the country. But after a guillotine illusion goes horribly and spectacularly wrong, their friendship and their careers are finished.
Now, down on his luck and out of cash, Harry sets his sights on the prize money of the prestigious ‘International Magic Shield’ tournament. But to win he will have to compete against the world’s oddest magicians – including his deadly rival Karl, performing under the guise of ridiculous psychic ‘The Mindmonger’.
Can new tricks and a new assistant help Harry to triumph over his underhanded opponents and his disastrous past?
Link: IMDb | Play.com

I won’t admit to being Mitchell and Webb’s biggest fans, I think The Mitchell & Webb look is a bit shit, but I do like Peep Show which at times is absolutely hilarious. I was sat downstairs, nothing was on and I was bored, so I flicked Anytime TV on and Magicians was there, so I watched it. As per usual David Mitchell was great, Robert Webb lesser so, but still entertaining as was the entire female side of the cast. The problem was that this film was completely spoiled by Webbs assistant in the film, talk about a load of shit. He’s not funny, can’t act and just pure funny looking. A film that’s certainly let down by its supporting cast. They’ll have to pick better next time.

Crank

Crank
Poison in his veins. Vengeance in his heart.
A professional hit man, Chev Chelios (Jason Statham) discovers that a poisonous injection threatens to kill him if his heart rate drops below a certain point. Now he must exact his revenge on the people who injected him before he takes his last breath!
Link: IMDb | Play.com

I’d heard that this film was terrible when it was released in cinemas. In fact, it absolutely tanked at the Box Office. However I’d heard it had garnered a bit of a cult-following, a lot like Donnie Darko did after it’s cinema release. It, much like Magicians was on Anytime TV, so I decided to watch it and all I can say is, I’m SO glad I did. The film is an excellent action film which has Statham using his natural accent and it really helps. He’s fantastic as the drugged up Chev Chelios and at times, hilarious. I’ve never seen a movie move at such a pace as Crank, it’s from start to finish. Don’t go into this expecting a great story or a compelling collection of characters, you won’t. You’ll see action, violence, and comedy and it’s none-stop. See it.

Enchanted

Enchanted
Featuring an all-star cast, the film follows the beautiful princess Giselle as she is banished by an evil queen from her magical, musical animated land and finds herself in the gritty reality of the streets of modern-day Manhattan. Shocked by this strange new environment that doesn’t operate on a “happily ever after” basis, Giselle is now adrift in a chaotic world badly in need of enchantment. But when Giselle begins to fall in love with a charmingly flawed divorce lawyer who has come to her aid, even though she is already promised to a perfect fairy tale prince back home, she has to wonder: can a storybook view of romance survive in the real world?
Link: IMDb | Play.com

This was somewhat of a guilty pleasure, it’s something I wanted to see at the cinema, but without a Girlfriend (awww) it’s impossible to go and see it as you can’t go on your own or with another guy… it doesn’t work for this kind of film… never. I’d heard it was good, but that doesn’t do it justice, it’s not good. It’s awesome. As my friend Matthew said, ‘It’s totally awesome… in a manly way’. I think that sums it up, definitely see it whether your Male, Female, Gay, Straight… it’s that good.

The Game Plan

The Game Plan
The Game Plan tells the story of rugged superstar quarterback Joe Kingman, whose Boston-based team is chasing a championship. A ‘serial bachelor’, Kingman is living the ultimate fantasy: he’s rich, famous and the life of the party. But this dream is suddenly sacked for a loss when he discovers the 7-year-old daughter he never knew he had – the product of a last fling before parting years ago with his young wife.
Now, during the most important time in his career, he must figure out how to juggle his parties, practices and dates with the new found ballet classes, bedtime stories and dolls that come with his daughter.
Equally perplexed is his hard-edged mega-agent, Stella (Kyra Sedgwick), herself without a parental bone in her body. Despite the often hilarious misadventures that come with being a new father, Joe discovers that’s there’s more to life than money, endorsements and thousands of adoring fans: the love and care of one very special small fan is the only thing that matters.
Link: IMDb | Play.com

I’m totally a fan of Disney movies… It stems from my awesome 1980′s childhood, so I still totally dig movies like this. I was also a massive Rock fan when he was wrestling around the turn of the Millennium, so 2+2=4 for me and I watched this. I thought it was great, unlike so many films in this list it isn’t let down, but rather benefited by it’s supporting cast. It also features the totally gorgeous, Latina looking Sandra Bullock, Roselyn Sanchez, so that’s another tick for me. It not a serious movie but an enjoyable one which you can watch in a couple of hours and be entertained by it. Good if you have nothing else to do, especially good if you enjoy The Rock and these kind of movies.

Juno

Juno
Juno (Page) is a whip-smart teenage girl confronting an unplanned pregnancy by her classmate Bleeker (Cera). With the help of her hot best friend Leah (Thirlby), Juno finds her unborn child a “perfect” set of parents: an affluent suburban couple, Mark and Vanessa (Bateman and Garner), longing to adopt. Luckily, Juno has the total support of her parents (Simmons and Janney) as she faces some tough decisions, flirts with adulthood and ultimately figures out where she belongs.
Link: IMDb | Play.com
Juno had the misfortune of potentially being a victim of its own hype, much like films such as Lost in Translation or Shakespeare in Love so I didn’t go into it with high expectations which is a good thing as I often find myself sniping at things from it, which isn’t the best way to go into any movie. Thankfully this film doesn’t totally suck ass like those mentioned before, so I actually enjoyed it, though at times I thought Ellen Page was guilty of overacting, especially in the earlier scenes, by the end she was brilliant though. The one issue I have with this film is that they tried to make Juno a little too clever, especially with the things she says, but they realised her immaturity of her actions or the things she says at times excellently. Featuring a cast of established actors and actresses, particularly from TV (my favourite) it was a solid performance all-round, especially from Michael Cera and Jennifer Garner, both of whom stood out for me. Great.

If you’re still reading this far… I’m amazed. Sorry for babbling on, I’ve actually cut this short as there are at least another 4 films I can think of, but this is taking WAY longer than I thought it would and it’s begun to annoy me :p.

Let me know what you think of any of these movies, I’d be interested to know, cheers.

Karl.

I would LOVE that Blade Runner on Blu-Ray!

  2. 2 NokkonWud07 Apr 2008

I really recommend you pick it up matey, it’s worth the money ten times over. The picture is mind boggling, but the extras alone make it stand out.

I never even mentioned Ridley Scotts commentary which is the best I’ve ever heard on a movie.

Also, if you didn’t know, the opening scene of Blade Runner over the city is actually based on ICI (now Corus) which is literally over the road from me. One of the most cult movie images of all time is actually based on something 5 minutes from me. Ridley Scott is a local to Teesside, so it’s something he always remembered. When you drive home from Middlesbrough to Redcar at night you can really see the inspiration of it.

Missed this post somewhere along the lines till just now :p
Good read :) And impressive editing to make it all look inviting ;)
Some great films there definitely. It’s made me want to go see most of them!

  4. 4 NokkonWud07 Apr 2008

Aye, it was a pain in the ass to get it looking nice enough without text all over the shop.

Glad you liked it though :) .
